PEERS® for Adolescence: Friendship Skills for Autistic and Neurodivergent Children

The programme includes a parent group and a student group which run alongside each other in separate rooms. We ask for one parent to attend the parent- group each week.

Each session focuses on developing a core skill which helps tweens or teens to improve their peer interactions, which in turn develops their social integration, social confidence and the quality of their relationships long term.

There is a different lesson or focus each week. The first four sessions focus mainly on developing conversational skills, followed by specific lessons to include: entering and exiting conversation, use of cover stories, using humour, electronic communication, managing disagreements, arranging get togethers, handling bullying and teasing, handling rejection and embarrassing feedback. Throughout the programme we consider friendships, whether that is making new friends or strengthening connections with acquaintances or friends.

We identify and help students self-identify specific goals to work on between sessions throughout the duration of the programme.

We use video analysis, regular behavioural practice, positive feedback and didactic instruction to enable progress.
